Wednesday 28 March 2007 - Preparing for Macquarie Island

Its nearly a week before I board the Aurora Australis headed for far-away Macquarie Island.  Yesterday I received the formal nod - I've been declared healthy and I'm allowed to go.  So its really happening.  This is a fantastic opportunity, as everyone keeps reminding me - however at the moment I am focussed on preparation - memory cards, disks, cables and batteries for the camera I'm still learning how to use, finding the best travel sickness tablets and wondering if I will be a casualty of the big Southern Ocean seas.  Surely not.  I've got those wrist bands so I'll be fine, I keep saying. Just focus on the seabirds.

That is really cool that WWF and Peregrine are doing this. I have just heard recently about the destruction rabbits are causing on Macquarie Island - so go get 'em. Just out of curiousity, what is the weather station for? Have a safe trip, Sue

Hey! Good luck on your journey!

I'm sure everything will be great! I am currently working for WWF on one of their campaigns, as an outbound upgrade telefundraiser, it's hard work but we are making a difference, I would hope to one day be working on the ground making a first hand difference such as yourself!

This island is very important to us and it's a darn shame that the tasmanian government is unwilling to help!

Good luck! And make sure you keep those of us watching posted, would love to be beside you taking the photos!
